There was a time, when friends were found in localities, schools or colleges. But as the world is moving towards greater evolution and the definition of friendship extends from people we spend time with to people who represent who we want to be, or share common ideas, the importance of social sites has risen to a new high. Social sites are places where one can find friends of their choice, that suit their personality. Agreed, friendships usually are based on bonding and how friends stand the test of time. But social sites are fast becoming the platform where likeminded people find each other to start a lifelong relationship.

More so often, the present generation is turning to the social sites to find the solace they have never known in real life. The understanding that is missing in most relationships is now the basis of hope. Poets find friends who understand the importance of words, writers find a mature audience on the same sites, who believe in growing and helping others grow too. It is this sharing of ideas and the understanding that is drawing the present generation more and more towards social sites.

Social sites are a great breeding place for future relationships. The mere fact that people are more open on these sites than they would ever be in day to day life adds to the charm of the social sites.  There isn’t a great degree of conservative attitude on the social sites, making people feel more comfortable in pursuing relationships with more fervor than they would in face to face encounters. Social sites are a good way to interact with people without getting very personal and this reason contributes heavily to the open attitude of people.

Places like twitter, facebook etc. let people stay in touch with each other, especially when they are too busy to be sending mails to all friends. Social sites are a way of constantly updating one’s world and letting friends know of new happenings, without worrying about missing friends. The sites are greatly customized to provide easier sharing or restricting what is shared.
The greatest advantage of social sites is the ease with which long lost friends, or classmates or colleagues could be traced. The freedom of the other person to choose to allow the new link or not adds to the openness of the whole setting. In the fast changing world it sometimes becomes too difficult to keep track of all friends. Some relationships suffer because of this, and the lack of interest slowly separates friends and relationships that had a good potential are nipped in the bud. Social sites are popular exactly for the reason that it gives a chance to long distance relationships and allows one to communicate with friends and acquaintances alike across the barriers of time and place.

All in all, social sites provide the network where people can constantly rediscover themselves and through common interests, others too, who would have been utterly unaware of each other’s existence.
